Good morning and happy Monday everyone! I'm so excited and thrilled to be part of this wonderful Make It Monday Blog Circle!
Have you recovered from the Thanksgiving holiday? Did you do any Black Friday shopping? I'm recovered from the holiday and ready to scrap our memories! Our son is back to college and it was so fabulous to have him home for the holiday. His time home is always so short and is never long enough for me! As far as Black Friday shopping... I'm not much of a shopper, so I spent the day at home with the family!!! How about you?
For my portion of today's M-I-M I'm going to show you how I like to make a digital template my own!
I started out with this template...
And finished up with this page.
While the end result is not that much different from the template I started with... I tweaked it just enough to suit my needs. I love templates! I feel they give you a starting point to help you design your page so you can concentrate more on telling the story that you have in mind or just showcasing your pictures.
For this particular page here are my thoughts and process...
I love using and including vintage pictures on my layouts... whether it is an old family picture or a generic one. For this particular page I used this generic vintage photo that I found in 'royalty free' images and have had in my stash for some time! I've just been itching to use it and it fit perfectly with the picture of the stockings hanging.
Masks are one of my favorite things to use on my pages. Here I combined two masks from my kits ( Template Blends Series 1 and Artistic Aspects of Christmas Masks No. 1 ) and filled with a photo. I love how masks are so versatile and can be used over and over again. Using the different blending modes, erase tools, opacity and merge layers, you can create a new look - using the same ole masks! Tip: Pull masks from several different kits to create your own. Fill with photos or papers for and assortment of different effects.
I've had so many scrapers say to me... I love templates but I never have the pictures to fit. That is ok! Don't be afraid to change the size or direction of the pictures. In the above layout that is just what I did, I wanted to include a picture that was horizontal rather than square.
I've also had many scrapers say to me... I never have enough photos to fill the photo squares in some of the templates. No worries! Here are a few things you can do... 1) delete/hide the photo squares not needed | 2) use the same photo more than once to highlight different angles or parts of the picture ( this is what I did in the above layout ) | 3) fill the photo square with paper and journaling | 4) fill the photo square with paper and embellishments. So many options!
Do you feel that some templates are too busy for your taste or not busy enough? Templates are only a base reference for you to use as a foundation for your page. That is the beauty of them... you can use them as is or change them up to suit your needs. When it comes to placing embellishments on the page, sometimes I feel like using a lot and sometimes I only want to use one ( on this page I pretty much followed the template and the placement of the embellishments ). If you have trouble with clustering, templates can be a great help and guideline. Tip: Love the little doo-dads that come on a template but not the right color? You can fill them with paper, fill them with a different color, opaque them or use different styles on them to suit your needs. ( In the above layout I used a metal style on the cute little snowflakes, I also re-colored and opaqued a few too. I mixed them up with the snowflakes included in the kit... it made for a wonderful assortment and variety. )
Do you have trouble with shadows and making them look realistic? There are some wonderful shadow styles out there for you to use.
To help make your title stand-out... simply add a stroke, beveled edge and slight shadow. Tip: Use an embellishment in place of a letter and give it a colored shadow.
Date, date, date... I always enclose a date on my pages for future reference and the generations to come.
I hope you have enjoyed these tips and they have been helpful to you!
Ingredients for the above page can all be found in my portion of the Creative Christmas Bundle.
